GSJ Maintenance Limited is contracted to provide Winter Maintenance operations on Network A. Winter Maintenance runs from 1st October to 15th May. A total of 18 gritters are used to treat the entire area of Network A and 25 snow ploughs are available for the management of extreme weather conditions. GSJ staff directly maintain and manage 11 routes. N1 North Junction 18 to Junction 20 maintained by Wintertech and M50 Junctions are maintained and managed by M50CL on behalf of GSJ.
GSJ apply pre-wet treatments and use Vaisala Manager weather prediction to record, communicate decisions and treatment times and have live streaming of winter fleet information. Typically salt usage has been between 2500 to 3000 tons of salt/annum, and precautionary grits during the season from 55 to 75runs. 2017/18 winter season was a very harsh winter with nearly 8000 tonnes of salt being used, and 110 precautionary runs, and well as reactionary treatments to numerous snow events including a one in 35 year event in March.
